State Board Listings
Cosmetology: 1500 hours, apprenticeship of not less than
2500 hours.
Barbering: 1500 hours, apprenticeship of not less than 2500
hours.
Esthetics: 750 hours, apprenticeship 1250 hour.
Nail Technology: 200 hours, apprenticeship 400 hours.
The State Board shall waive an exam and grant a license to an applicant who
seeks reciprocity, provided that the applicant has a valid license from a State
whose requirements are equal to or greater than Maine's.
Home salon and Mobile salon allowed.

Cosmetologist
|
Must be at least 17 years of age
and have completed 9th grade or G.E.D. Applicant must submit proof of
completion of 1500 hours of training in a cosmetology school or 24 months as a
registered apprentice in a licensed beauty salon. |

Esthetician
|
Must be at least 17 years of age
and have completed the 9th grade or G.E.D. Applicant must submit proof of
completion of 600 hours of training in a cosmetology school or 12 months as a
registered apprentice in a licensed beauty salon. |
|
Nail Technician
|
Must be at least 17 years of age
and have completed 9th grade or G.E.D. Applicant must submit proof of
completion of at least 250 hours of training in a cosmetology school or 8 months
as a registered apprentice in a licensed beauty salon. |

Makeup Artist
|
Must be at least 17 years of age
and have completed 9th grade or G.E.D. Applicant must submit proof of
having successfully completed a course or program in makeup artist services
approved by the Board. |

Senior Cosmetologist
|
Must submit proof of working for
24 months as a licensed beauty in a licensed cosmetology salon or barber shop
and qualify by examination given by the Board. |

Owner Salon
|
Submit approved use and
occupancy permit from local zoning agency with license application. |
|
Owner Limited Practice
|
Owner Limited Practice license
is issued for either manicuring or esthetician. Submit approved use and
occupancy permit from local zoning agency with license application. |

Apprentice Cosmetologist
(Limited to 1 one-year original
license & 2 one-year renewals)
|
Must complete an application and
sponsorship form which must be signed by a senior cosmetologist and salon
owner. Must complete 24 months of
training with at least 30 hours per week. Licensees are required to mail monthly
training reports to the Board each month. |

Apprentice Esthetician
(Limited to 1 one-year original license & 1 one-year renewal)
|
Must complete an application and
sponsorship form which must be signed by a senior cosmetologist or a 2 year
licensed esthetician and salon owner.
Must complete 12 months of training with at least 30 hours per week. Licensees
are required to mail monthly training reports to the Board each month. |

Apprentice Nail Technician
(Limited to 1 one-year original
license)

sponsorship form which must be signed by a licensed senior cosmetologist or 2
year licensed nail technician and salon owner. Must
complete 8 months of training with at least 30 hours per week. Licensees are
required to mail monthly training reports to the Board each month. |
Reciprocity: Maryland grants reciprocity to those
individuals who hold a license from a State whose requirements are the same as
or greater than those of Maryland's.

All applicants must be at least 17 years of age and have a minimum level of
education equivalent to the 9th grade.
Reciprocity: All individuals licensed in another state may obtain their
license in the state of Michigan by making an application to the board and
meeting the requirements of 17 years of age and a 9th grade education. No
examination is required. For those individuals whose states have requirements
less than those in Michigan a credit of 100 hours per every 6 months work
experience will be awarded.

An applicant must have at least a twelfth grade education or a G.E.D.
Electrology is not licensed by the State but may be regulated by the local
municipality. Reciprocity may be granted to currently licensed applicants who
pass the Minnesota Board Exam and who have at least 1800 hours of licensed
experience within the last three years.
